Posted February 19, 2002 (HB 1783 and HB 1784) 
There will be hearings today (February 19) for HB 1783 and HB 1784 before the House Education - Elementary and Secondary Committee. The hearings will begin at 3:00 p.m. in House Hearing Room # 3. HB 1783 would change the name of the Missouri Commission for the Deaf to the Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and HB 1784 would statutorily recognize that American Sign Language "is the native language of many deaf Missourians."

The executive Director of the Missouri Commission for the Deaf will testify in support of both bills. Advocates who wish to lend their support to these bills can do so by testifying before the Committee, if at all possible, and/or contacting the Committee members and asking that they vote for HB 1783 and HB 1884.
