There
will be hearings today (February 19) for HB 1783 and HB 1784 before
the House Education - Elementary and Secondary Committee. The
hearings will begin at 3:00 p.m. in House Hearing Room # 3. HB 1783
would change the name of the Missouri Commission for the Deaf to the
Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and HB 1784
would statutorily recognize that American Sign Language "is the
native language of many deaf Missourians."
The executive Director of the Missouri Commission for the Deaf will
testify in support of both bills. Advocates who wish to lend their
support to these bills can do so by testifying before the Committee,
if at all possible, and/or contacting the Committee members and
asking that they vote for HB 1783 and HB 1884.
