February 22, 2002 (Lobby Day 2002 for Disability Rights)
|
The Missouri
Commission for the Deaf is pleased to announce that we had a very
busy and constructive “Lobby Day 2002 for Disability Rights” at the
capitol yesterday. The event began with speeches in the rotunda by
Representatives Joan Bray, Chuck Graham, Charles Portwood, and Vicky
Riback-Wilson to an audience of over 200 persons. These legislators
took time out of their busy schedules to speak to us, and are
legislators who are actively involved in working for people with
disabilities in the legislature.
After the opening speeches, the MCD staff and several deaf
supporters spent the afternoon visiting with legislators, thanking
them for their past help, and asking them to support the bills
presently before the legislature that would benefit persons who were
deaf and hard of hearing. We were able to physically meet with
Senators Gibbons, Goode, Gross, Kinder, Rohrbach, and Sims, as well
as Representative Barry. In addition visits were made to the offices
of Representatives Copenhaver, Haywood and Lowe, as well as Senator
Kenney, and messages were left in those offices indicating the
current legislative desires of MCD. The MCD staff wishes to thank
Kathleen Aiple, Paul Blicharz, Nancy Edmondson and Harold Schelp for
joining us for the afternoon to help lobby for the needs of people
who are deaf and hard of hearing. We hope that even more persons
with hearing loss will be able to join us for future Lobby Days.
