Hearing for ASL Bills (Reminder)

The Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing wants to remind everyone that there will be a public hearing for House Bill 310 before the House Education Committee on Wednesday, April 16, 2003. That hearing will be held upon afternoon adjournment (starting anytime around 6:00 p.m.) in House Hearing Room # 3. House Bill 310 is sponsored by Representative Vicki Walker of Kansas City, and if adopted would require that all educational institutions in Missouri treat American Sign Language as a "foreign language" for credit granting and receiving purposes, as well as for meeting language requirements for admission and graduation. Advocates who would like to see HB 310 become law are encouraged to attend the public hearing for the bill on April 16. Advocates who cannot attend the hearing are encouraged to contact one or more members of the House Education Committee and request that they support HB 310. It is most important that as many people as possible contact the chair of that committee, Representative Jane Cunningham, and request her support for HB 310. Representative Cunningham can be contacted by calling 573-751-1186 (V), sending a fax to 573-526-9852, and/or sending an e-mail to.

Contact information for the members of the House Education Committee follows:
