Last week
House Amendment # 7 (HA # 7) was removed from HS HCS HB 564 by the
Senate Committee on Financial and Government Organization, Veteran's
Affairs and Elections. That is the amendment that would create a new
"Provisional Public School Certificate" for interpreters who were
nominated by local school districts. MCDHH opposes the language of
that amendment for various reasons, and the support of the deaf and
interpreting communities helped get the amendment removed by that
Senate committee.
However, MCDHH has been informed that an attempt
will be made to add the amendment back to the bill when it is
debated in the Senate on Third Reading. Presently the bill is on the
Senate Calendar for Third Reading, and will probably be voted on
sometime this week. Therefore, advocates who oppose that amendment
should continue their pressure in opposition to the amendment.
Advocates who oppose the creation of a "Provisional Public School
Certificate" should immediately call, fax, and/or e-mail all
senators and urge them to oppose House Amendment # 7 (which would
create a "Provisional Public School Certificate") if an attempt is
made to add it to HB 564. |
