There will be a public
hearing for SCS HCS HB 1040 before the Senate Governmental
Accountability and Fiscal Oversight Committee on Monday, May 3,
2004, at 12:15 in the Bingham Gallery of the Capitol Building.
This is the bill that had section 209.321.6 added in the Senate
Education Committee and, if it became law, would completely exempt
all educational interpreters in Missouri directly from the licensure
law and indirectly from all certification requirements.
The
Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is strongly
opposed to section 209.321.6 as it presents a POTENTIALLY
DEVASTATING ATTACK upon the Missouri Interpreters Certification
and Licensure System, and would result in GREAT HARM TO DEAF
STUDENTS in Missouri public schools. Therefore, MCDHH will
testify in opposition to section 209.321.6 of SCS HCS HB 1040.
Like-minded advocates who want to see section 209.321.6 deleted from
this bill should come to the Capitol and testify at the
hearing on Monday and/or contact all of the members
of the Senate Governmental Accountability and Fiscal Oversight
Committee and urge them to "delete section 209.321.6 from SCS HCS HB
1040 because it would do great harm to deaf student in Missouri
public schools."
