10, 2004 Two New Bills Incorporate License Exemptions for Interpreters
It has just been learned
that the language that would create a "provisional public school
certificate" and exempt all holders of that certificate from the
license law has been added to HCS SS SCS SB 1122. In addition the
language that would exempt all educational interpreters from the
licensure law has been added to HCS SS SCS SB 968. Needless to say,
MCDHH is opposed to any language that would exempt all or some of
the educational interpreters in our state from the licensure and
certification laws for any period of time, as they may potentially
do irreparable harm to deaf students in Missouri public schools.
Both of these bills were sponsored by
Senator Charles Shields of St. Joseph, Missouri, and both of these
bills are now on the House calendar of Senate Bills for 3rd
Reading. MCDHH would urge all
advocates who would like to see changes in these bills to
immediately contact their representatives and let them know that you
are "strongly opposed to the
sections of HCS SS SCS SB 1122
and HCS SS SCS SB 968 that would
exempt educational interpreters from the licensing law."
