April 18, 2005 Public Hearing for HB 472 (Requires Captioning of Video Materials in
Public Schools) |
HB 472 will have a public hearing before the House
Elementary and Secondary Education Committee on Wednesday of this
week (April 20th) at 8:00 AM in House Hearing Room # 3. HB 472 would
require manufacturers and distributors of all video educational
media with spoken content designed or marketed for students in
grades K-12 to provide open or closed captions on all such media
beginning 1/1/06. This would include media such as videotape, CD,
DVD, film, teleconference, and television. MCDHH really needs a
variety of people to show up and testify in support of this bill if
it is to have any chance of passage by this committee. In
particular, we need support from parents and friends of deaf and
hard of hearing students, teachers, school administrators, current
or former students, and interpreters who work with deaf and hard of
hearing students. Please let us know if you will be able to testify
on Wednesday.
If you cannot testify, supporters of this bill should immediately
send a brief e-mail or fax to the chair of the House Elementary and
Secondary Education Committee, Representative Jane Cunningham of
Chesterfield, that briefly does the following:
(1) Indicates that you support HB 472,
(2) Gives your reason for supporting HB 472, (3) Requests that Representative Cunningham support HB 472.
