HB 530 (ASL Bill) Referred to House Committee on Higher Education |
HB 530 was assigned to the House Higher Education
Committee on 2/24/05. HB 530 was introduced by Representative Danie
Moore. If passed, HB 530 would require that American Sign Language
be treated as a "foreign Language" for all credit granting and
receiving purposes, as well as meeting "foreign language"
requirements for admission and graduation in all public educational
institutions in Missouri. We will keep you informed when a date for
a public hearing is announced.
The Missouri Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing is very
pleased with the response that we have received supporting this
bill. We now have already received over 100 emails/letters/faxes in
support of HB 530, but we want and need many more. If you haven't
already written in support of HB 530 please send us as soon as
possible an email/letter/fax briefly indicating why you would like
to see that bill passed. Letters should be addressed to Dr. Roy E.
Miller, Executive Director, Missouri Commission for the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing, 1103 Rear Southwest Blvd., Jefferson City, MO
65109. Faxes can be sent to me at 573-526-5209, and e-mail should be
sent to roy.miller@mcdhh.mo.gov. Please remember to include your
full name and mailing address with your note -- regardless of
whether you send a fax, letter, or e-mail. And if you have already
written, then pass the word and recruit a couple of friends, family
members, or workplace colleagues to write in support of HB 530.
Every added "voice" helps. |
