HB 530 (ASL Bill) Reported "Do Pass" by House Rules Committee |
Just a few minutes ago the House Rules Committee
voted "Do Pass" for HB 530, which was reported out of the House
Education Committee yesterday with a "Do Pass" recommendation. If
enacted into law, HB 530 would give students in all public
educational institutions in Missouri credit for taking American Sign
Language (ASL) classes if those classes are offered in the regular
curriculum of the institutions. It would also allow students to earn
ASL credit by proficiency if an educational institution offers
courses in ASL. And it would allow students to use ASL to satisfy
“foreign language” or “language arts” admission and graduation
requirements at any public institution of higher education in
Missouri. There was unanimous support for HB 530 in the Rules
Committee. HB 530 now goes on the House Calendar, and hopefully will
be voted on by the full House sometime soon.
The legislature begins it's Spring Break today and will return on
March 29th. This is the perfect time for everyone to call or visit
their local Representative and urge him or her to vote for HB 530
when it goes to the House floor. It is also an opportune time to
visit with your local Senator and urge him or her to support HB 530
if and when it gets to the Senate. If you don't know who your local
Representative or Senator is, you can find out by going to http://www.senate.mo.gov/llookup/leg_lookup.aspx
and simply entering your full 9-digit zip code. Let's keep the
momentum going on this bill, and everyone please call or visit your
local Representative and Senator and urge their support for HB 530.
