HB 530 (ASL Bill) Placed on the Calendar |
Good news!!! HB 530 has been placed on the calendar
of House Bills for Perfection. If enacted into law, HB 530 would
give students in all public educational institutions in Missouri
credit for taking American Sign Language (ASL) classes if those
classes are offered in the regular curriculum of the institutions.
It would also allow students to earn ASL credit by proficiency if an
educational institution offers courses in ASL. And it would allow
students to use ASL to satisfy “foreign language” or “language arts”
admission and graduation requirements at any public institution of
higher education in Missouri.
It is likely that HB 530 will come up for a vote by the full House
sometime early next week. So now is the time for all proponents of
HB 530 to e-mail, fax or call their representative with a simple
message: "PLEASE VOTE FOR HB 530 AS IT WOULD BENEFIT DEAF AND HARD
OF HEARING MISSOURIANS AT NO COST TO THE STATE."
If you don't know who your local Representative or Senator is, you
can open http://www.senate.mo.gov/llookup/leg_lookup.aspx and simply
enter your full 9-digit zip code. And contact information for all of
the representatives can be found at http://www.house.state.mo.us/default.aspx?info=/bills051/member/memmail.htm.
