GREAT NEWS!!! ASL Bill Passes Senate |
HB 530 was read a third time and voted on by the
Senate late last night, and was passed by a vote of thirty-two (32)
"Yes," zero (0) "No," and two (2) "Abstain." HB 530 would require
that all public schools in Missouri treat American Sign Language as
a "foreign language" for credit granting and receiving purposes, and
for meeting admission and graduation requirements in public colleges
and universities in Missouri. HB 530 has already been passed by the
House by an overwhelming vote of 151 to 2. It now goes to Governor
Blunt who will either support it (sign it into law) or veto it. All
advocates who would like to see this bill become law should now
contact the Governor's office and request that he "SUPPORT HB 530
AND SIGN IT INTO LAW AS IT WOULD BENEFIT MANY DEAF, HARD OF HEARING
AND HEARING STUDENTS IN MISSOURI." The Governor's office can be
contacted by phoning 573-751-3222\) or by sending e-mail to mogov@mail.mo.gov.
We're just one signature away from the ASL bill becoming law -- an
outcome that MCDHH has been seeking for many years. Let's do
everything we can to "go the extra mile" and finish this long
dialogue with a successful ending! |
