HB 589 (Real-Time Captioning of Local News) Referred to House
Utilities Committee |
At the request of the Missouri Commission for the
Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Representative Jenee Lowe of Kansas City
filed HB 589. HB 589 would require that beginning January 1, 2006,
all television stations in Missouri with revenues over $3,000,000
provide real-time captioning for all of their local news, weather,
and sports broadcasts. HB 589 was referred to the House Utilities
Committee on 2/24/05. We will let you know if and when a public
hearing is scheduled for HB 589.
MCDHH wants to do everything possible to get this bill passed this
year. Therefore I am asking everyone who supports this bill to send
an e-mail, fax, or regular letter to me indicating their support for
the bill (see contact info below). Please do that as soon as
possible, as I want to be prepared to show those letters to various
legislators and members of the committee to which the bill has been
assigned. It would also be "good politics" if people sent an e-mail
to Representative Lowe (jenee.lowe@house.mo.gov) thanking her for
introducing this bill.
